SASKATOON, SK, May 1 /CNW/ - Syngenta Crop Protection Canada, Inc. is
pleased to announce the launch of the second annual Horizon(R) Blimp Tour.
Departing from Saskatoon on May 1, 2008, the 35-foot remote controlled Horizon
Blimp will make its way across Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba as part of a
90-day, 30-community, three-million acre journey across Western Canada that
culminates in Brandon, MB on July 28.
On its voyage the Horizon Blimp will touch down in 30 largely rural
communities across the prairie provinces, with 18 stops scheduled in
Saskatchewan, eight stops in Alberta and four stops in Manitoba. In each
community the Horizon Blimp team will put on a number of stunning aerial
acrobatic displays featuring nose-dives, stationary hovering and vertical take
offs (weather permitting). On-board video cameras will capture video footage
from heights of up to 450 feet which will be displayed live on TV screens on
the ground to give splendid aerial panoramic views of local farms and
landmarks.
"The Horizon Blimp is a reminder for growers to look up and enjoy the
horizon and the prairie skies, safe in the knowledge that Horizon has taken
care of the weeds down on the ground," said Greg Jowett, Head - Cereals and
Oilseeds, Syngenta Crop Protection. "This year we are pleased to expand the
Horizon Blimp program to include a new Horizon educational scholarship fund.
Through the Horizon scholarships we aim to give back to these agricultural
communities and thank local growers for their loyalty, hard work and
commitment to being good stewards of the land."
Syngenta will award 30 Horizon scholarships of $1,000 each to students
living in and around the 30 communities on the 2008 Horizon Blimp Tour.
Eligible students must have a family involvement in a farming operation and be
enrolled or enrolling in a post-secondary education program this fall to study
agriculture, natural science or business. The deadline for submissions is
August 15, 2008, and winners will be selected based on academic performance,
community involvement and letters of reference from members of the community.
Applications forms and full details on the Horizon scholarships can be found
at www.HorizonBlimpTour.ca
Local growers also have the opportunity to have their favourite photo of
the prairie skies featured in one of Syngenta's advertising campaigns for
2009. The Horizon Blimp photo contest offers one lucky shutterbug the chance
to win a cash prize of $500 as well as bragging rights to the advertising
campaign photo that will be featured in agricultural magazines across Canada.
Full details on the photo contest can be found at www.HorizonBlimpTour.ca.
