STORY SUMMARY:
Results of the JUPITER study were released today at the American Heart
Association and suggest that seemingly healthy Canadians may be saved from
first heart attacks, strokes, or even death if they are screened for elevated
hsC-reactive protein (hsCRP) and successfully lower their cholesterol levels,
even when their cholesterol levels are considered normal.
Nearly one half of all cardiovascular events occur in patients who are
apparently healthy and who have low or normal levels of low density
lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), a traditional indicator of cardiovascular
risk.SHOT LIST:
Interview with Dr. Jacques Genest, McGill University Health Centre,
Montreal

Dr. Jacques Genest on cam Dr. Genest clip:
C-reactive protein belongs to a class of
molecules that are elevated in acute
inflammation. A low level of CRP but
elevated compared to normal, may reflect
chronic inflammation. And that may be
the only risk factor in patients who
have a normal LDL cholesterol and few
other cardiovascular risk factors.

And/or insert: The trial showed that patients who
Text over a moving background received 20mg of CRESTOR(R) daily,
of key findings, stats, graph, (rosuvastatin calcium) had reduced
chart, etc. first cardiovascular events by 44%
compared to a placebo.(3) This is the
greatest reduction in risk seen in the
large placebo-controlled statin
trial.(4)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dr. on cam Dr. Genest clip:
We've known for many years that more
than half of the patients who develop a
myocardial infarction have normal levels
of LDL cholesterol. It's also been known
for a while that C-reactive protein is
elevated in most patients with heart
disease and therefore, JUPITER tested
the hypothesis that treating normal LDL
cholesterol level but high CRP would
have a reduction in cardiovascular end
points.
