Broadcasting Consortium announces draw results and formats for the Federal Party Leaders' debates


    OTTAWA, Sept. 19 /CNW/ - Draws were held today at the National Press
Theatre in Ottawa to determine the order in which opening and closing
statements of the party leaders will be made, seating arrangements, and other
logistical details for the upcoming televised federal party leaders' debates.
Representatives from each of the five political parties in the debates
participated in the draws.
    Also in attendance were representatives of the Broadcasting Consortium -
CBC, Radio-Canada, CTV, Global and TVA - as well as the media.
    There will be two debates. The French debate will be moderated by Stephan
Bureau and will be held at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa on Wednesday,
October 1, 2008, from 8 to 10 p.m. EDT. The English debate will be moderated
by Steve Paikin and will also be held at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa on
Thursday, October 2, 2008, from 9 to 11 p.m. EDT.
    All questions will be posed by Canadians via videotape. The broadcasting
consortium has received more than 3,000 questions from Canadians across the

    French at question@electionsdebat2008.caThe moderator will pose follow-up questions. Each candidate will have 45
seconds for an opening statement and 45 seconds for a closing statement.
    The debates will be divided along eight major themes. The parties will be
advised of the themes, but not the questions, about five days before the
debates. Each leader will have 45 seconds to answer each question. This will
be followed by approximately eight minutes of open debate.Following are the results of today's key draws for each of the two
