BURNABY, BC, Dec. 1 /CNW/ - United Steelworkers (USW) Western Canada
Director Stephen Hunt officially announced on Monday the appointment of Scott
Lunny as the new Assistant to the Director.
"We welcome Scott to this new position in the Steelworkers and I have
much confidence that he will be able to meet the many challenges of this
important position," said Hunt. "He has demonstrated the energy and the
ability to organize numerous and simultaneous tasks for our union."
Lunny, 36, is the former Director of Policy and Information Services for
the Industrial, Wood and Allied Workers of Canada (IWA Canada) and has served
in many capacities for the USW since the merger of the IWA Canada with the
United Steelworkers in 2004.
In addition to being a key member of the union's bargaining committee in
the BC Forest Industry, Lunny has worked to spearhead the union's political
action and organizing programs while managing several administrative duties.
"Scott has been able to take the union's policies and work with union
staff and local unions to make them work on the ground in a progressive and
practical way," said Hunt. "His ability to work with others at the grass-roots
level and also represent our union in provincial, national and international
initiatives has been very beneficial to our membership."
Lunny is a Commerce graduate from the University of British Columbia and
has more than 13 years experience in organized labour. He attended Harvard
University's trade union program last year.
Lunny succeeds former Assistant to the Director Carol Landry, who became
a USW International Vice President in July, 2008.
