TORONTO, Feb. 5 /CNW/ - The race has narrowed in TVO's Big Ideas 2008
Best Lecturer Competition and TVO is pleased to announce 10 finalists. From
English and psychology to architecture and the culinary arts, the professors
represent a range of disciplines but have all distinguished themselves for
their ability to present ideas with conviction, clarity, energy and authority.
The finalists were chosen by a panel of independent judges - former
teacher, school principal and politician Zanana Akande; author, poet and
award-winning journalist Barry Callaghan; and actor/writer/producer Tony Nardi
- who reviewed video submissions of lectures.
"Some are flamboyant; others are solid. All embody intellectual passion
in action," says Big Ideas producer Wodek Szemberg. "The 10 finalists have
been endorsed by their students and passed muster with an unusually demanding
jury. The broadcast of their lectures will allow viewers to experience the
best that higher education in Ontario has to offer, and then to cast their
vote for their favourite professor. It's a month-long course in humanities and
social sciences without any registration or exam - just for the sheer love of
The 10 finalists will deliver complete lectures on Big Ideas Saturdays
and Sundays over five weeks beginning March 1, 2008, between 4 and 6 pm ET.
Then, it's over to the viewers to grade the professors online at tvo.org or by
phone at 1.866.281.3536, and ultimately decide who will be Ontario's next Best
Lecturer. The winner's institution will receive a $10,000 TD Meloche Monnex
scholarship. One lucky viewer will win a 55" plasma television and home
Big Ideas is TVO's televised lecture series. Now in its third year, the
Best Lecturer Competition sponsored by TD Meloche Monnex galvanizes the
post-secondary community and plays an important role in raising awareness
about the province's great educators.
