Jacques Cartier Bridge - Closure of the sidewalk and cycling path

LONGUEUIL, QC, Dec. 10 /CNW Telbec/ - The Jacques Cartier and Champlain
Bridges Incorporated wishes to inform pedestrians and cyclists that, for
safety reasons, the sidewalk and cycling path on the Jacques Cartier Bridge
will close for the winter season on Thursday December 11 early morning.
Every year, the Corporation must proceed with these closures for the
safety of users and due to the associated difficulties with maintenance of the
surfaces during winter. The bridge is prone to the formation of black ice due
to mist conditions from the St Lawrence River, not to mention the sidewalks
are slanted to drain water away, making them unsafe for cyclists and
pedestrians during freezing conditions. The physical constraints of the
sidewalks also make the snow removal process costly to perform.
The sidewalk and the cycling path will reopen in the spring 2009.
