TORONTO, June 16 /CNW/ - Canadian Standards Association (CSA), Canada's
leading developer of standards and codes, today officially announces the
recipients of the 2008 Awards of Merit. The Award of Merit is an honour
bestowed by CSA to individuals that have demonstrated leadership in developing
Canadian voluntary standards and who, through technical, administrative, or
special standards activities, have advanced the purpose of the Canadian
Standards Association.
The 2008 Awards of Merit were presented by Julia Hill, Chair of the
Board, CSA Group at a special awards ceremony held during the CSA Annual
Conference in Calgary, Alberta.
"CSA volunteer technical committee members make an immeasurable
contribution to society through their selfless, ongoing efforts in standards
development and promotion," says Suzanne Kiraly, President, Standards,
Canadian Standards Association. "The Award of Merit is CSA's way of
recognizing and honouring each recipient's hard work and devotion to
developing standard that impact our daily lives, contribute to the betterment
of society, and advance Canadian economic well being. These volunteers are
owed an enormous debt of gratitude for their tireless efforts."
The 2008 Awards of Merit were presented to the following individuals:- Dr. Tarek Aziz of Mississauga, Ontario receives the Award of Merit in
recognition of his leadership, determination and dedication to the
development and promotion of nuclear standards. Dr. Aziz is a
designated Civil/Structural Specialist and Principal Civil Engineer
at AECL.
- Douglas Cane, P.Eng., LEED AP of Mississauga, Ontario receives the
Award of Merit in recognition of his outstanding leadership and
technical expertise in the Electrotechnical, Energy Efficiency and
Renewables area. Mr. Cane is President, Caneta Research Inc., which
provides energy efficiency consulting services to industry,
government and associations.
- Frank Chan, P.Eng. of Calgary, Alberta receives the Award of Merit in
recognition of his outstanding leadership and commitment to the
development and advancement of Electrical/Electro-technical
standards. Mr. Chan is currently Manager, Standards and Power Quality
at FortisAlberta Inc.
- Dr. Betty Crown, of Edmonton, Alberta receives the Award of Merit in
recognition of her exceptional leadership and sustained personal
involvement in the development, advancement and application of
voluntary standards. Dr. Crown is currently Professor Emeritus in the
Department of Human Ecology at the University of Alberta.
- Jean-Robert Dufour, CD, of Deschaillons-sur-Saint-Laurent, Québec
receives the Award of Merit in recognition of his outstanding
leadership and commitment to the CSA nuclear standards program.
Currently he works as Représentant, assurance qualité Projet de
réfection with Gentilly 2, Bécancour at Hydro-Québec.
- Benoît Fournier of Québec City, Québec receives the Award of Merit in
recognition of his outstanding contributions with respect to
construction materials and concrete, and related standards
development. He is currently Assistant professor in the Department of
Geology and geological engineering of Université Laval in Québec
City.
- Dr. Magdi Ishac, P.Eng. of Toronto, Ontario receives the Award of
Merit in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the
development of Electro-technical/Electrical standards, particularly
in the area of overhead systems. Dr. Ishac is a Senior Design
Engineer Specialist, Hydro One, Lines Engineering.
- Mustafa Jaffer of Ottawa, Ontario receives the Award of Merit in
recognition of his outstanding involvement and leadership in
developing and promoting quality management systems standards. He is
Director, Quality Systems at Tundra Semiconductor Corporation.
- Norman Kummerlen, P.E. of Lorain, Ohio receives the Award of Merit in
recognition of his outstanding contributions in the development and
promotion of plumbing standards. He is Principal Engineer in the
Product Compliance Department of Moen Incorporated.
- Ken Sharp, P.Eng. of Calgary, Alberta receives the Award of Merit in
recognition of his exceptional leadership in developing standards
that address the needs of the petroleum and natural gas industry and
regulators in Canada. Mr. Sharp is Manager, Facility Applications,
Oil and Gas Regulatory, with the Alberta Energy Resources
Conservation Board.
- Dr. V.S. (Uma) Umamaheswaran of Ajax, Ontario receives the Award of
Merit in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the creation
and maintenance of CSA's extensive portfolio of Information and
Communication Technology standards. Dr. Umamaheswaran is Senior
Analyst, Globalization Centre of Competency, IBM Software Laboratory
in Markham, Ontario.
- Dr. Carl Wilson, PEng. of North Vancouver, British Columbia receives
the Award of Merit in recognition of his longstanding involvement and
inspired leadership in the development of CSA wood product,
construction, and structural design standards. Dr. Wilson is
President and Principal Consultant of Carl R. Wilson & Associates
Ltd.
- David Yarwood of Toronto, Ontario receives the Award of Merit in
recognition of his dedicated involvement and active leadership in
developing and advancing standards relating to occupational health
and safety. Currently, Mr. Yarwood is Director of Canadian
Distribution Development at Mine Safety Appliances.The CSA Award of Merit
The Award of Merit was created in 1979 to honour and recognize leadership
in Canadian voluntary standards development. Nominations are open to all
present or past CSA voting members, as well as former CSA employees that have:
served in CSA committee activity or other associated standardization work;
showed leadership in technical, administrative, or special committee
activities; published papers, or made public addresses, which have been of
special benefit to the work of the Association; and have advanced the prestige
or interest of the Canadian Standards Association.
