Suncor upgrades its scholarships
Two Pointe-aux-Trembles students have their interest in the sciences rewarded
MONTREAL, Sept. 3, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - For the fifth edition of Suncor Energy's scholarship competition, two Pointe-aux-Trembles students interested in the sciences have each received a scholarship that allows them to complete a Diplôme d'Études Collégiales (DEC) in Techniques de procédés chimiques at Collège de Maisonneuve. The recipients are Samuel-Antonio Saad-Penalva and Gabriel Limoges from Daniel-Johnson and Pointe-aux-Trembles high schools, respectively.
"My hearty congratulations go out to our two 2014 recipients. I encourage them to take full advantage of our scholarship program and to complete their science studies. Should they then wish to join the ranks of Suncor's Montreal refinery, as Félix Gendron-Chartier and Jean-Sébastien Le Boulaire, two scholarship recipients from the competition's first edition, have done, our door will be wide open for them," says Jean Côté, Vice President of Suncor's Montreal refinery.
The aim of Suncor scholarships is to stimulate Pointe-aux-Trembles high school students' interest in the sciences. To be even more effective in achieving this goal, starting with the next edition Suncor scholarship recipients will, in their second year of college, receive an additional sum of five hundred dollars ($500) toward the purchase of a laptop computer.
Collège de Maisonneuve, its Fondation and Suncor Energy are proud to join forces to create initiatives that promote jobs in the industrial processes sector, with an eye toward sparking the interest of youth and meeting future industry needs in qualified labour. "Our dearest wish is to welcome to our classrooms always more students who are passionate and driven, as are Samuel-Antonio Saad-Penalva and Gabriel Limoges from Daniel-Johnson and Pointe-aux-Trembles high schools," says Éric Raymond, assistant director of Collège de Maisonneuve's department of studies.
Suncor scholarship program
The program was launched in 2009 and awards two scholarships per year to each of two Pointe-aux-Trembles high schools. The scholarships cover tuition fees and the cost of books, learning material and safety equipment. At the end of the training at Collège de Maisonneuve, Suncor Energy also provides a traineeship at its Montreal refinery. Once studies are completed, those candidates who meet hiring criteria may be invited to join the refinery's ranks. Eleven young students have been awarded a Suncor Energy scholarship to date.
In addition to being a springboard to advanced studies, the DEC in Techniques de procédés chimiques opens the door to employment opportunities in a variety of sectors, among them the chemicals industry, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, environmental sciences, refining and petrochemistry.
