Harper government announces an important investment at Grande Prairie Airport

Enhancing safety in Northern Alberta

GRANDE PRAIRIE, AB, Aug. 26, 2014 /CNW/ - Chris Warkentin, Member of Parliament for Peace River, on behalf of the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport, today announced that the Government of Canada is investing $5,536,924 for the rehabilitation of Runway 12-30 and repairs to the apron, along with the purchase of an aircraft rescue firefighting vehicle at the Grande Prairie Airport. 

The work on the runway and apron will ensure continued safe operation for passengers, employees, medical evacuations and firefighting operations, while the state-of-the-art rescue and firefighting vehicle will greatly enhance emergency response capability at the Airport.

Funding comes from Transport Canada's Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP).

  • To date, through ACAP, the Grande Prairie Airport has received over $20.7 million in funding for 17 safety projects, including today's announcement. 
  • Previous projects included the rehabilitation of Taxiway A and Runway 07-25; improvements to the airside apron; and the replacement of a towed runway sweeper, a wheeled loader, and a plow truck and blade.
  • Since the program started, the Government of Canada has invested close to $650 million for 788 projects at 174 airports across the country.
