CHARLOTTETOWN, Aug. 14, 2014 /CNW/ - Juno Award-winning rockers, The Sheepdogs, will headline the Atlantic Lottery / Red Shores Main Stage in the PEI 2014 Celebration Zone on August 23. The Province of Saskatchewan, a partner of the PEI 2014 celebrations, will be showcased August 18 to 24 during Saskatchewan Week at the free, family-friendly Celebration Zone - a 70-day cultural festival celebrating the creation of our nation on the historic Charlottetown waterfront.
"We are pleased to help PEI celebrate the 150th anniversary of the 1864 Charlottetown Conference – the event that led to the creation of our country," Minister of Parks, Culture and Sport Mark Docherty said. "This is a great opportunity to celebrate our great nation, and showcase what Saskatchewan has to offer – our culture, our incredible artists, our amazing food and our hospitality."
Saskatchewan's vibrant culture and performing artists will be featured during the week. Other main stage performances include the Regina Symphony Orchestra Chamber Players; Juno-nominated indie rockers, Rah Rah; critically acclaimed indie pop band, Library Voices; up-and-coming country singer-songwriter, Blake Berglund; contemporary dance group, FADA Dance; innovative singer-songwriter, Belle Plaine; acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, Donny Parenteau; comedian Kelly Taylor; and visual artist Dean Bauche.
'Movie Night in the Park' on Monday, August 18, will feature 4 episodes of the beloved Saskatchewan sitcom Corner Gas, featuring Brent Butt. Corner Gas: The Movie just finished filming in Saskatchewan and will be out in theatres before the holiday season.
On Sunday, August 24, an RCMP sunset ceremony will take place following the Regina Symphony Orchestra Chamber Players' performance. The sunset ceremony is an old military tradition that involves lowering the Canadian flag to mark the end of the day. Saskatchewan has a very close connection to the RCMP as the RCMP Depot is located in Regina where cadets have been training since 1885.
The Saskatchewan Science Centre will also be at the PEI 2014 Celebration Zone all week. The Science Centre's Go! Science outreach team will be providing interactive workshops that will help visitors learn all about the amazing resources, science and innovation in the province of Saskatchewan. In addition, Tourism Saskatchewan will be sending its famous Green Screen, and encouraging all Islanders and visitors to get their photo taken 'in Saskatchewan.'
"We are thrilled to be celebrating Saskatchewan Week at the PEI 2014 Celebration Zone this summer," says PEI 2014 Executive Director, Penny Walsh McGuire. "We look forward to experiencing Saskatchewan's wonderful culture and heritage as they help us make PEI 2014 a truly Canadian celebration."
Visitors to the PEI 2014 Celebration Zone can enjoy excellent Saskatchewan food products and top-notch cuisine throughout the week at the Fathers Pub and Oyster Bar.
In 2014, Canadians will mark the 150th anniversary (sesquicentennial) of the historic 1864 Charlottetown Conference, which led to the creation of Canada. PEI 2014 Inc. is facilitating the planning, promotion and implementation of the sesquicentennial celebrations. The PEI 2014 celebrations are made possible through generous support from the Government of Canada, the Government of Prince Edward Island, and the City of Charlottetown. The year-long and province-wide PEI 2014 program of events will honour the past, celebrate the present and plan a bold tomorrow.
