Quebec Knights of Columbus : Leader in Charitable Giving
2013 statistics prove once more the great generosity of Quebec Knights
SAINT-HYACINTHE, QC, June 19, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - The more than 90,000 members of the Knights of Columbus in Quebec donated $11.4* million and nearly 1.7 million hours of service to charitable causes in 2013, making Quebec the most charitable of the Knight's 70-plus regions.
The charitable giving from members in Quebec often sets the pace for the Knights of Columbus, which is the largest Catholic fraternal organization in the world and is present in all 50 U.S. states, all Canadian provinces, several regions in Mexico, and in other countries and territories in Europe, the Caribbean and Latin America.
"The generosity of our members in Quebec is an inspiring example to every member of our organization," said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. "Their contributions of time and money help to improve the quality of life of those most in need. On behalf of our more than 1.8 million members, I congratulate them for their inspiring work."
Quebec has long been among the most generous and active regions in which the Knights of Columbus operates, according to the organization's annual fraternal survey. The Knights' presence in Canada began in Quebec with the establishment of a council in Montreal in 1897 – just 15 years after the original foundation in the United States. Also, the founder of the Knights of Columbus, Venerable Servant of God Father Michael J. McGivney studied in Montreal prior to his ordination.
"I am proud of the great work done by our members here," said Quebec State Deputy Pierre Beaucage."As the numbers make clear, Quebec Knights are deeply committed to charitable giving in their communities. Wherever there is a need, our goal is to be there to help."
The 90,000 members of the Knights of Columbus in Quebec are organized in more than 500 councils across the province.
Founded to do works of charity and provide for the spiritual growth and financial stability of Catholic families, the Knights of Columbus also offers a top-rated life insurance program exclusively to its members and their families.
Proceeds from the life insurance program also benefit charitable causes around the world, and help support the work of local councils. No insurer in North America is more highly rated than the Knights of Columbus, which has earned A.M. Best's top rating of A++ for 38 consecutive years. This year, the Knights of Columbus was also honoured as a "World's Most Ethical Company," one of two companies in the life insurance category and one of fewer than 150 companies worldwide to be so honoured.
Globally, the Knights have also set records in charitable giving by providing more than 70.5 million hours of charitable service and over $184 million in donations to charitable causes in 2013. Knights councils throughout Canada donated an all-time high of more than $30 million in 2013 with 9,323,063 hours of service.
