Vale of Sudbury to Receive Fire Safety Award

TORONTO, June 16, 2014 /CNW/ - Vale, a global mining company with operations in Sudbury, will receive a Fire Safety Award from the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council at a ceremony on June 19, 2014 in Toronto. The annual Fire Safety Awards recognize outstanding contributions to fire protection and prevention in Ontario.

Vale has been a long-time supporter of the Greater Sudbury Fire Services' public education initiatives. This winter, Vale partnered with the fire department to produce "Fire and Ice" hockey cards that were distributed to more than 5,000 people at an OHL game. Each card featured a Sudbury Wolves player and important fire safety messages.

Vale previously sponsored a public service announcement (PSA) about the dangers of fast flowing waters in rivers and creeks. The PSA has aired for an entire month each spring for the past three years.

Most recently, Vale partnered with the fire department in the purchase of an inflatable fire safety house, which is used at numerous schools and community events as well as during the Hot Summer Nights program. Sudbury's inflatable fire safety house has the distinction of being the first in Ontario to be wheelchair accessible.

"Vale's commitment to the community is evident in its ongoing support of fire and life safety in the Greater Sudbury Area," said Ted Wieclawek, Chair, Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council. "This partnership has been very important in educating the community about fire safety in an interesting and accessible way."

The Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council gratefully acknowledges the support of its sponsors in this event: TD Bank Group, Toronto Blue Jays, Union Gas Limited/ A Spectra Energy Company, Technical Standards & Safety Authority - TSSA, Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc. Proctor & Gamble Inc., Electrical Safety Authority, CSA Group, The Co-operators Group, Kidde Canada Inc., Roxul Inc. and The Home Depot.
