Security experts issue challenge to Canadian businesses
Is security a lost cause or can data breaches be prevented?
TORONTO, May 31, 2014 /CNW/ - "Name a large security or privacy breach that could NOT have been prevented with standard best practices". Informatica CEO and Principal Risk Advisor Claudiu Popa today issued an open challenge to organizations of all sizes, in the private or public sector, to show the importance of good data protection.
The Verify Challenge is named after Informatica's core set of 6 industry leading security audits and privacy assessments. $25,000 in security solutions will go to the first 10 organizations to identify or report a significant data breach.
Available from SecurityandPrivacy.ca, the company's Verify™ services are widely trusted to identify security vulnerabilities and analyze privacy risk using:
- Web site security and stress-testing
- IT security & physical audits
- Privacy impact assessments
- Policy and procedure reviews
- Employee security awareness testing
- Compliance & controls evaluations
According to the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, the 97 major breaches reported so far this year have two things in common. All organizations suffered damage as a result of the incident and every one was preventable by applying standard information risk management techniques.
The Verify Challenge is designed to raise awareness about the importance of risk management for every Canadian company. "Without at least some security testing and risk assessment, companies have absolutely no rational basis for spending money on protecting their information. Those that do probably suffer from a false sense of security" says Popa, a respected management consultant and author.
"There are no strings attached. We believe all security breaches are preventable and invite companies to email submissions to Verify@SecurityBreach.ca"
Informatica Security welcomes participation from all Canadian businesses. The Verify Challenge is open from June 1st to September 1st.
