/R E P E A T - What do Marian Gaborik's NHL postseason leading 8 goals have to do with Maple Leafs' great Borje Salming and Hockey Canada's drive to bring back hockey to Canadian elementary schools?/

TORONTO, May 14, 2014 /CNW/ - The answer is floorball and if you haven't heard of it yet, the Canada Cup Floorball Championship taking place this weekend at Mattamy Athletic Centre, the former Maple Leaf Gardens, is the perfect place to learn more.

Floorball is a fast-paced, exciting, safe and low-cost type of indoor hockey. Floorball is an Olympic recognized sport and is an amazing way for ice hockey players to work on their stickhandling, shooting and passing skills, including Marian Gaborik's favorite sport when he's off the ice.

This weekend floorball teams and players from across Canada and Europe congregate at Mattamy Athletic Centre for one of the world's largest floorball events. Over 60 teams from the following cities are taking part: Toronto, Ottawa, Whitby, Belleville, Ennismore, Spruce Grove (AB), Markham, Mississauga, Hamilton, Winnipeg (MB), North York, Cambridge, Montreal (QC) and international teams from Switzerland and Jamaica.

Hockey Canada is behind floorball in a big way, introducing the sport as their official elementary school program (www.hockeycanada.ca/floorball) and recommending it to be played in all of the Hockey Canada Skills Academies across the country.

Borje Salming's equipment company, Salming Sports, is leading the introduction of floorball to Canada and has a huge pop-up store sponsored by Shopify at Maple Leaf Gardens all weekend. The Salming store stocks floorball, hockey, squash, racquetball, handball and running equipment.

Games are played starting Friday, May 16th and end with division finals on Monday, May 19th. A special media game is taking place on Friday to showcase the sport. Floorball representatives will be on hand to speak with media.
