OTTAWA, May 9, 2014 /CNW/ - Following four-time Paralympic swimmer Donovan Tildelsey's announcement of his retirement, the Canadian Paralympic Committee would like to congratulate him on a successful career that saw him win two silver and three bronze medals at the Paralympic Games.

Tildesley, of Vancouver B.C., also won five gold medals at the Parapan American Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2007 and was Canada's flag bearer at the opening ceremony at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games.

He still holds the world record in the 800-m freestyle, 1500-m freestyle and 200-m butterfly in the Olympic-size pool and the 200-m freestyle in the short-course (25-m) pool in the S11 category for swimmers with a visual impairment.

"On behalf of the Canadian Paralympic Committee, congratulations to Donovan on his impressive career which spanned from Sydney 2000 to London 2012," said Gaétan Tardif, President of the Canadian Paralympic Committee. "In addition to his accomplishments in the pool, Donovan is a great leader and ambassador for Paralympic sport. One of the many examples of his inclusive sportsmanship was when he jumped the pool with television personality Rick Mercer to introduce Mercer to para-swimming. We wish Donovan well in his future endeavors and we welcome him to continue in an active role in promoting Paralympic sport and in mentoring our next generation of athletes."
