Annual Run benefits research at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and celebrates Harry Rosen's 60th Anniversary

TORONTO, April 5, 2014 /CNW/ - 5,000 participants showed their support today in Toronto's High Park to raise $200,000 to benefit prostate cancer research at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre during the 9th annual Harry's Spring Run-Off 8K and 5K to Conquer Prostate Cancer. The run, first sponsored by menswear retailer Harry Rosen in 2005, has raised more than $2.5 million.

"Since 1954 Harry Rosen has been advising men on all aspects of their lives," says Larry Rosen, Chairman and CEO of Harry Rosen Inc. "This year, as we celebrate our 60th Anniversary, we're more committed than ever to assisting Canadian men. Why does Harry Rosen care about prostate cancer? Because we care about men. It's as simple as that."

Participants in the event ranged from elite runners, to those 'suit'ably attired in creative outfits, and children, as the run also included an 800-metre dash for the youngest philanthropists.

"We're thrilled to partner with Harry's Spring Run-Off.  The monies raised through this event allows us to accelerate Personalized Prostate Cancer Medicine which focuses on finding the right treatment for the right patient at the right time." says Dr. Bristow, Senior Scientist at the Ontario Cancer Institute and GU Radiation Oncologist at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer threat to Canadian men. One in seven men will be diagnosed with the disease in their lifetime. Despite improvements in early detection and therapy for prostate cancer, about 3,940 men died from this disease last year. The good news is more than 90% of prostate cancer cases are curable if detected and treated in their earliest stages. Men over the age of 45 are urged to speak to their doctors about testing.
