Video B-Roll Available via Downloadable link - Breakthrough Study: Natural Supplement (EQUAZEN™) Decreases ADHD Symptoms in Children when Taken Alone or in Combination with Methylphenidate
MONTREAL, April 4, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - The study is deemed groundbreaking by ADHD experts because it's the first time a natural supplement treatment has been compared to commonly prescribed MPH-based ADHD medication and was found to be surprisingly effective.
This study demonstrated that the natural supplement EQUAZEN™ taken alone reduces attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in children with the inattentive subtype. In combination with methylphenidate (MPH), an ADHD medication, it helps to lower MPH's side effects in both inattentive and hyperactive children.
Pediatric Neurologist Eduardo Barragán et Al. published his study findings in the Journal of Attention Disorders earlier this year, and presented this week to Montreal-based New Nordic, the Canadian distributor of EQUAZEN™.1
"We were surprised to see how effective EQUAZEN™ was on its own, particularly in children with the inattentive type of ADHD. More interestingly, when combining the supplement with traditional treatments, children experienced significantly less side effects. "Their mood improved, their appetite came back and their anxieties decreased." said Dr. Barragan.
The authors of the study concluded that nutritional supplementation with a specific ratio of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) is effective and could be considered as a good option for long term monotherapy in inattentive ADHD children and as an adjunctive therapy when used in combination with MPH.
Considering the increasing number of ADHD diagnoses in Canada, over 5% of children aged 4-17 have ADHD and numbers continually rise. Many parents turn to ADHD medications to help their kids improve their focus, attention and impulsivity. However, given the recent shortage of methylphenidate, and knowing about the drug's potential side effects, parents may find it comforting to know that there are natural alternatives.
About the natural supplement - EQUAZEN
EQUAZEN has been proven in several clinical studies to improve concentration levels in children and adolescents with ADHD (Richardson et Al. 2005, Sinn et Al. 2007, Sinn et Al. 2008, Johnson et Al. 2009, Parletta et Al. 2013).
Several studies suggest that EQUAZEN's composition (EPA, DHA, GLA at the 9:3:1 ratio) is more effective in helping kids with learning difficulties and ADHD, compared to other ratios (Bloch et Al. 2013, Sinn et Al. 2010, Schuchardt et Al. 2010).
Particularly during development, EPA and DHA play crucial roles by supporting brain function and structure, while all three have important anti-inflammatory functions.
