National association for Licensed Producers creates focal point for industry expertise, leadership

OTTAWA, April 1, 2014 /CNW/ - New regulations governing the supply and distribution of medical cannabis are now in effect. The Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulations (MMPR) come into effect today and will fundamentally change the way Canadians access marihuana for medical purposes by moving to a new commercial system led by approved licensed producers (LPs) regulated by Health Canada.

Today also marks the official launch of Canada's most inclusive national industry association representing Licensed Producers, the Canadian Medical Cannabis Industry Association (CMCIA).

The CMCIA and its founding members have been working alongside government throughout the transfer from the previous Medical Marijuana Access Regulations (MMAR) to the MMPR system we have today.

"These regulations will change the way Canadians access cannabis for medical purposes. We are committed to working positively with our patients, government, educational institutions, health care providers and law enforcement agencies on issues related to the access and regulation of medical cannabis."

- Marc Wayne, Interim-Chair, CMCIA

The CMCIA's mission is to promote national standards and best practices by supporting the development, growth and integrity of the medical cannabis industry. The CMCIA is the national voice for our members and serve as a credible and trusted resource on important issues related to the Canadian medical cannabis industry

Over the coming weeks and months, policy development priority  for the CMCIA will include:

  • Affordability
  • Derivatives
  • Business Code of Conduct
  • Product Safety (Including Independent Lab Testing)
  • Membership
  • Social Responsibility
  • Privacy
  • Advertising
  • Research

As more producers are licensed across the country, the CMCIA looks forward to taking the industry to new levels. Throughout the initial roll-out, CMCIA is committed to the secure and reliable access of medical cannabis for qualified patients, and the promotion of its safe and effective use.
