/R E P E A T -- Chrétien tribute in Toronto January 21st/

TORONTO, Dec. 17, 2013 /CNW/ - Canadians from across the political spectrum will come together in Toronto on the evening of January 21st, to celebrate the half-century public career and milestone 80th birthday of one of our country's most remarkable citizens - the Rt. Hon. Jean Chrétien.

Under the co-chairmanship of Ed Broadbent, Jean Charest, Adrienne Clarkson, Bill Davis and Brian Tobin, the dinner will be themed "50 Years of Standing Up for Canada".  Mr. Chrétien was first elected to Parliament in 1963, launching a 50-year public career for the man known affectionately from coast-to coast-to coast as "the Little Guy from Shawinigan".  Over the next two decades he held almost every senior cabinet position in the federal government.  He served as Prime Minister from 1993 to 2003.

Mr. Chrétien turns 80 on January 11th (a birthday he shares with Canada's first Prime Minister, John A. MacDonald) - just days before the Toronto celebration.

Proceeds from the evening will go toward the establishment of La Maison de la francophonie de Toronto - an umbrella charitable organization which will offer support, and a shared roof, to not-for-profit Francophone organisations which provide educational, social and community-building services to the Toronto's (and the Ontario's) diverse Francophone (and Francophile) communities.
