Media Advisory/Photo Opportunity - Hamilton-Area Steelworkers Spread Christmas Cheer

HAMILTON, Dec. 13, 2013 /CNW/ - Hamilton-area Steelworkers are making a difference for families and communities this Christmas season.

"We try to be more than just worker representatives in the communities we work and live in, we believe that we can and do make a difference. The Christmas season is a time for giving and we and our locals have been working all year long so that we can make Christmas special for those who struggle day to day to get by," says Darren Green, President of the Hamilton Steelworkers Area Council.

Steelworkers will be presenting toys and donations to community partners from the Hamilton, Burlington, Brantford, Simcoe and Fort Erie communities on Monday, Dec. 16 at the Hamilton Steelworkers Hall at 11 a.m.

WHO:   Community organizations including the United Way, Wesley Urban Ministries, the Brantford and Simcoe Food Banks, the Salvation Army, Hamilton Food Share and Hamilton's St. Matthew's House
WHAT:  Hamilton Steelworkers Christmas Cheer Event
WHERE:  Steelworkers Hall
1031 Barton Street East, Hamilton
WHEN:  Monday, December 16, 11:00 a.m.

In addition, Hamilton's St. Matthew's House will receive donations and toys at the Steelworkers' Christmas Cheer event, thanks to a raffle and toy drive organized by the Women of Steel Committee.

"Most of our workers are doing well because they belong to a union, but they recognize the hardship of others due to so many plant closures and layoffs. Our members feel a need to take care of those who are less fortunate," said Ron Wyatt, Hamilton Steelworkers Area Coordinator.

Guests at the Area Council meeting and Christmas Cheer event include Ken Neumann, USW National Director; Tony DePaulo, Assistant to Marty Warren, Director of District 6; Mary Long, President of the Hamilton and District Labour Council as well as representatives from the community organizations.
