Articsok Gallery - Surrealism for the 21st Century
TORONTO, Oct. 30, 2013 /CNW/ - Salvador Dali is surely turning in his grave. Articsok Gallery in Toronto has unveiled a timely but provocatively aimed and very engaging exhibit entitled SURREALISM for the 21st Century.
"Public sentiment is everything. With public sentiment nothing can fail. Without it nothing can succeed. He who molds opinion is greater than he who enacts laws." President Abraham Lincoln
This quote reverberated and became the driving force for two canvases in which Canadian plus American cultural realities fused with fantasy when the national ideologies of skeptics were interpreted by the sentiments of cynics. Political biases are delineated on canvas, coupled with religious dogma thus begging the question, just exactly who is permitted on "The Cross"?
Oblique references abound to iconic art works from the past, including to those of recently deceased Alex Coleville. Further challenges facing viewers are portraits linking realism and psychology, puzzling photography with nuances of color (alluding to the female spirit) in addition to sculptures which turn the mundane into the magnificent!
The show overall will take on the role of a catalyst for many viewers, shifting their comfort zone by challenging artistic preconceptions and stretching old boundaries. That dynamic is the central role of great art!
A profound collection of sculptures and paintings from 15 gifted artists.
