Toronto Hydro and the Toronto Humane Society kick off the second annual Pet Safety Week in Toronto!
PET SAFETY WEEK 2013 - October 20-26
TORONTO, Oct. 18, 2013 /CNW/ - If you're a pet owner, you likely do everything you can to ensure that your four-legged friends are free from harm. From getting their noses into poisonous plants, to catching their paws on dangling electric cords, animals easily find ways to get into trouble. That's why Toronto Hydro-Electric System ("Toronto Hydro") and the Toronto Humane Society have teamed up for the second annual Pet Safety Week. This year, Pet Safety Week takes place from October 20 - 26. Pet owners will be armed with simple strategies to keep animals safe, all year-round.
To prevent pets from becoming "sick as a dog," pet owners should:
- Pet proof the home (similar to baby proofing,) in order to keep animals out of harm's way.
- Be mindful of electrical equipment like street lighting fixtures, metal covers on the sidewalk, street signs, and other energized utility structures.
It's unknown just how many animals ingest substances that cause illness or death. However, the Toronto Humane Society says that many day-to-day items inside and outside the home can be potential risks and warns owners to:
- Be diligent in making sure that toxic items are out of reach. Simple foods such as chocolate can be dangerously toxic, and can even be fatal to some pets.
- And with Halloween just around the corner, a lot of potentially dangerous treats will be left outside and in the home.
