Statement by Minister of Status of Women on International Day of the Girl
OTTAWA, Oct. 11, 2013 /CNW/ - Today the Honourable Dr. K. Kellie Leitch, Minister of Status of Women, issued the following statement on the occasion of International Day of the Girl:
"On this special day, let us celebrate girls and young women as powerful voices of inspiration within their families and communities.
Throughout our history, generations of Canadian girls have been leaders and role models whose accomplishments have positively impacted society. Whether Olympic hockey players, scientists or entrepreneurs, these girls and young women have excelled in everything that they do.
This unique day falls within Women's History Month in Canada, affording us the opportunity to honour the tremendous contributions of the young women and girls who helped build and shape our great nation.
This day is also fitting as we honour Malala Yousafzai for being nominated for the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize at such a young age. In the past year, the world took notice of the incredible power a girl like Malala can have on her country and on the rights of girls around the world. Against incredible odds she has shown courage and determination in the face of constant threats of violence. She has raised awareness about girls' education and will continue to pave the way and inspire girls around the globe.
We know that many young girls around the world face daily hardships such as violence, hunger and disease. Let this day remind us to do whatever we can to help them receive the nutrition, healthcare and education they need for safe, healthy, and happy lives.
On this, the second International Day of the Girl, I encourage Canadians to support and celebrate girls and young women in communities across Canada for their contributions to our country's past, present and future."
