Canada Celebrates Organic Week, September 21-28, 2013
OTTAWA, Sept. 19, 2013 /CNW/ - This September 21-28 marks the fourth annual Organic Week. Across the country, Canadians will come together to celebrate the fastest growing food and agriculture sector in the country: organics.
Coordinated by Canadian Organic Growers, the Canadian Health Food Association and the Canada Organic Trade Association, Organic Week is celebrated through a variety of public events, farm tours and workshops dedicated to informing consumers of the health and ecological benefits of choosing organic products.
"Canadians want to know how their food is produced and where it comes from" said Ashley St Hilaire, Director of Operations of Canadian Organic Growers "Organic is a sure way to know your product is sustainably and ecologically produced".
"The regulations and strict organic standards give Canadians the peace of mind that when they see the Canada Organic logo they are not only investing in their health but they can feel confident they are purchasing products made without the use of toxic chemicals, which support sustainable environmentally friendly practices and animal welfare," added Helen Sherrard, president of the Canadian Health Food Association.
Recent research has shown Canada's organic market is currently worth $3.7 billion, and has tripled in value since 2006, despite the impact of the recession over the wider economy. "Our study shows that 58% of all Canadians purchase organic every week" said Matthew Holmes, Executive Director of the Canada Organic Trade Association, "more and more consumers are choosing organic products every day, and the Canada organic logo makes it easy to do so".
Organic Week events will take place from Newfoundland to British Columbia and will range from movie screenings to farm-tours. Many retailers and farmers markets will also use the week as an opportunity to showcase organic products and educate consumers.
