MONTREAL, Feb. 19, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - The Old Port of Montréal Corporation, in collaboration with Héritage Maritime Canada, is proud to invite you to the first edition of the Montréal Ice Canoe Challenge in the Old Port, on Saturday, February 23. Come celebrate the return of this typically Quebec extreme sport to the shores of the St. Lawrence after a 20-year absence.
The Montréal race is sure to be spectacular, with a course running between the Clock Tower Basin, Jean Drapeau Park and the Alexandra Basin. Thirty-five teams will be at the starting line, in three classes: women's elite, men's elite and sport. The Ice Canoe Challenge is the fifth stop on the Circuit International de Canot à Glace, with more than $10,000 in prize money for participating athletes.
Saturday, February 23
12:45 p.m.: Consecutive starts by the men's elite, women's elite and sports class teams. Visitors will be able to watch the race from the Clock Tower Quay, where there will also be entertainment and a heritage presentation on ice canoes by ethnologist Richard Lavoie
3:30 p.m.: Rescue boat demonstration in the basin.
4 p.m.: Award ceremony at the Montréal Yacht Club
