Peter McQueen wants to save NDG and Snowdon Post Offices

MONTREAL, Feb. 4, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - Peter McQueen will file a motion tonight at the Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce Borough to oppose the closure of two post offices in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce and Snowdon. Since January 15th, Canada Post has initiated consultations on their proposal to close two post offices on 5751 Sherbrooke West and 4944 Decarie Boulevard. "I want to protect the commercial space and preserve the vitality of the neighbourhood. Sherbrooke Street, in my district, is a gem with these small shops. The loss of a post office, an attraction for these other businesses, could put a vacuum on Sherbrooke compromising its commercial vitality," said Peter McQueen, councillor for Notre-Dame-de-Grâce.

Jason Hughes is the owner of the Cooperative de la maison verte on Sherbrooke Street. His business depends on the postal service for e-commerce: "I am concerned for neighbourhood businesses that depend on the corporate services of the post office. I am also concerned about the deterioration of the quality of customer service to residents and area businesses. I believe that Canada Post has a social responsibility to provide nearby services."

"I think this is an important issue for our borough, particularly in the Snowdon district and NDG, my district. I hope that in the spirit of cooperation and to advance the cause of our citizens and our businesses, other elected officials in Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce will support this motion," said Peter McQueen.

Citizens have until February 15th to submit their views to Canada Post.
