Harper Government Supports the 2013 International Ski Federation (FIS) Snowboard World Championships

STONEHAM, QC, Jan. 18, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, on behalf of the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), today announced the Government of Canada's contribution to Canada Snowboard in support of the 2013 FIS Snowboard World Championships. The event is taking place until January 27 in Stoneham, Quebec.

"Our Government is pleased to provide support to Canada Snowboard for the 2013 FIS Snowboard World Championships, one of many World Championship events to be hosted in Canada this year," said Minister of State Gosal. "Hosting major sport events showcases our communities to the world and brings an economic boost to our local businesses. I congratulate the organizers and volunteers and wish all our athletes the best of success in their pursuit of excellence."

"Our Government is pleased to provide ongoing opportunities for our athletes to compete with the world's best here on home turf. Our athletes are an enormous source of pride and inspiration to all Canadians."

The FIS Snowboard World Championships are held every 2 years and attract up to 300 athletes from over 25 countries. This year, 24 Canadians are expected to participate.

The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from playground to podium. A contribution of $1,144,875 was provided to Canada Snowboard through Sport Canada's Hosting Program. The Government of Canada also approved approximately $3 million to Canada Snowboard in 2012-2013 through the Sport Support Program. Sport Canada's Athlete Assistance Program also provided $545,000 to help 44 Canadian men and women snowboarders with their living and training expenses in 2011-2012.
