Ontario Liberals complete election of leadership delegates

Delegates will vote for Ontario Liberal Party leader at January 25-26 leadership convention

TORONTO, Jan. 14, 2013 /CNW/ - For a second day in a row, Ontario Liberals turned out in large numbers at local Leadership Election Meetings to vote for delegates for the January 25-26 leadership convention. Members of the Ontario Liberal Party  riding associations, student clubs and women's associations in South Central, Southwest and Toronto regions completed voting on Sunday, January 13. Voting in Central, Eastern and Northern regions took place on Saturday, January 12.

"It is a tremendous vote of confidence in the leadership candidates and in the future of the Ontario Liberal Party that so many Ontarians took time this weekend to participate," said Yasir Naqvi, Ontario Liberal Party president.

Each constituency association elects 16 delegates to attend the convention and vote for party leader, each student club elects eight delegates and each women's club elects one delegate. To be elected leader, a candidate must receive votes from 50 per cent plus one of elected and ex-officio delegates. Ex-officio delegates include sitting Liberal MPPs, former Liberal MPPs, current Liberal MPs from Ontario and party executive members.

The convention takes place the weekend of Friday, January 25, at Ryerson University's Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto.

Below are the combined results of local votes taking place Saturday and Sunday, including the total number of elected delegates and percentage of elected delegates committed to each candidate on the first ballot, as well as independent delegates. The results below do not include the riding association of Durham which requires a tie-breaker for one spot, to be carried out later this week.
