IABC Calgary Half-Day Social Media Workshop

Tuesday, January 22, 2013
8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
University of Calgary, Downtown Campus
906 - 8th Avenue SW

CALGARY, Jan. 8, 2013 /CNW/ - When the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) re-vamped its corporate goals and objectives in order to engage with its customers in a way that was casual, transparent and non-bureaucratic, social media seemed to be the perfect way to go. The only question was: how to do this with no extra budget and only one employee?

In this half-day workshop, Karin Basaraba will share how she helped ICBC start its social media program using only one employee who was able to correct false information, provide customer service, manage ICBC's reputation, and bring a face to an otherwise faceless company—proving that it doesn't take much to get started using social media. Drawing on her IABC award-winning social media work, Karin will show attendees that it doesn't take much to get started in social media and that it can be done on a relatively small budget with limited human resources. She will give attendees concrete steps and takeaways to get their social media presence off the ground in a strategic and sustainable way.

From this session you will leave with practical tactics on how to:

  • Determine what social media channels are appropriate for your organization
  • How to get started on a social media strategy that fits in to your corporate strategy
  • Respect the privacy of your audience while providing effective customer service

Karin Basaraba is an account manager with PR Associates, a public relations firm with Canada's largest and most comprehensive mining practice. She focuses on corporate communications and strategic planning, as well as social and digital media.
