Canada Removes Iranian Opposition Group from Terror List

TORONTO, Dec. 21, 2012 /CNW/ - On an Application by Clayton Ruby of Ruby Shiller Chan Hasan, the Canadian government yesterday announced the removal of the People's Mojahedin Organisation of Iran (PMOI) from its list of terrorist organizations.  This is the first removal of any organization from Canada's terrorist list under the Criminal Code.

PMOI is a pro-human rights and pro-women's rights group opposed to the Iranian regime.  It seeks to replace the theocratic regime in power in Iran with a secular, democratically elected government.  It has no armed faction.

Canada's decision follows earlier decisions of the United Kingdom, the European Union and the United States, each of which removed the PMOI from their respective lists of terrorist entities.

"The People's Mojahedin Organisation of Iran should never have been declared a terrorist organization in the first place" said Clayton Ruby, lawyer for the organization in this Application for removal.  "This corrects an historic mistake."
