Portlands Energy Centre Hosts Colloquium on Strengthening Sustainable Power Plants and their Communities
Power plant joins energy sector with researchers to brainstorm ecosystem solutions
TORONTO, Nov. 19, 2012 /CNW/ - To foster ongoing collaboration between researchers and industry to enhance our ecological footprint, the Portlands Energy Centre (PEC), Toronto's natural gas fired power plant, is hosting a colloquium on November 29, 2012 at Ryerson University, and sponsored by its Centre for Urban Energy.
The event will feature case studies about PEC's ecosystem restoration initiatives, as well as innovative water solutions at a Southern California Edison plant and Bonneville Power Administration's fish and wildlife mitigation programs. It will also include speakers from Biochar Consulting, the East End Sustainability Network, EcoMetrix Incorporated, the University of Guelph, Ryerson University, SENES Consultants Limited, and Toronto and Region Conservation Authority.
Between presentations, delegates will advance ideas and share insights about current and evolving ecological sustainability practices and how energy sector workers can partner with local communities to implement them.
"The colloquium underscores the opportunity for power plants to re-think how they relate to their environment and community," says Curtis Mahoney, General Manager, Portlands Energy Centre. "By working with academics, researchers and the public, we can make a viable contribution to improve the ecosystem in which we operate for future generations."
PEC is delivering the event in cooperation with its Ecological Sustainability Committee. This group, comprised of third-party academics, engineers and community members, works with PEC to implement its diverse ecological sustainability strategy that addresses land, water, air and wildlife. Opportunities and challenges tabled at the event will be recorded, shared and sustained for future sustainability initiatives.
