Beyond Borders ECPAT Canada celebrates 10th anniversary of Media Awards
Sheldon Kennedy to receive honour for his courage and advocacy work
WINNIPEG, Nov. 18, 2012 /CNW/ - Beyond Borders ECPAT Canada will hold its 10th annual Media Awards on November 19, 2012 at the Fort Garry Hotel in Winnipeg. The bilingual awards honour Canadian journalists and filmmakers for exceptional coverage of issues related to child sexual exploitation. Rod Black, voice of CTV Sports and TSN, and Max Poulin, former Winnipeg Goldeyes player and Beyond Borders ambassador, will co-host the ceremony.
"We are proud to honour journalists this year spanning from Quebec to British Columbia for their outstanding work covering the issue of child sexual exploitation, states Beyond Borders' president, Rosalind Prober.
To commemorate the 10th anniversary, Beyond Borders ECPAT Canada is unveiling the inaugural Rosalind Prober Award, named after the co-founder and president of the organization. Sheldon Kennedy will be the first recipient. Kennedy had an eight-year career playing with the National Hockey League. He made the courageous decision to charge his junior hockey coach, Graham James, with sexual assault for five years of abuse he suffered while he was a teen.
The Media Awards will be preceded by an educational symposium on current issues in child sexual exploitation, including cyber-bullying. The awards ceremony will feature musical performances by Western Canadian Music Award nominee Indian City as well as French Canadian singer/songwriter Dominque Reynolds.
