Toronto Hydro Power Restoration Update #7
TORONTO, Oct. 30, 2012 /CNW/ - Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited (Toronto Hydro) reports that approximately 9,000 customers remain without power in the city. The utility has restored service to approximately 85 per cent of customers affected by the storm.
Crews are assigned to nine main power lines that remain out of service. These lines provide power to large pockets of customers. The following areas are experiencing outages which require complex repairs and customers should prepare to be without power for at least the next 4-6 hours:
- Lawrence Ave. south to Eglinton Ave., Jane St. east to Dufferin St.
- Lawrence Ave. south to Eglinton Ave., Bayview Ave. east to Leslie St.
- Dundas St. W. south to Bloor St. W., Quebec Ave. east to Dundas St. W.
- Humberside Ave. south to Indian Rd. Cres., Indian Rd. east to Dundas St. W.
- Finch Ave. W. south to Churchill Ave., Bathurst St. east to Yonge St.
- Sheppard Ave. south to York Mills Rd., Yonge St. east to Bayview Ave.
- The Kingsway south to Dundas St. W., Kipling Ave. east to Royal York Rd.
Crews are also now turning repair efforts to "secondary lines" that provide service to just a couple of homes each. This work is labour intensive and will take some time. We ask for our customers' continued patience as our crews work to restore them.
Toronto Hydro estimates that more than 85 per cent of the outages that occurred have been caused by tree limb contacts with our power lines, due to the fact that Toronto has a dense, and extensive, mature tree canopy. As a result, we estimate that the cost of this storm will be in the range of $1 million. Other utilities in the GTA have not experienced this type of damage, as the tree canopies in their jurisdictions are not comparable to Toronto's.
