Toronto Hydro reports 6,500 customers without power- Update #3
TORONTO, Oct. 29, 2012 /CNW/ - As of 9:30 p.m., approximately 6,500 Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited (Toronto Hydro) customers are without power as a result of severe weather caused by Hurricane Sandy. Fallen branches and downed trees caused by winds gusting at more than 60 kilometres an hour have triggered localized outages.
Extra repair and forestry crews are responding to outages through the night. High winds are expected to peak before midnight and may impact restoration by making overhead equipment repairs unsafe for crews working from bucket trucks. The majority of repairs will be made in the early morning once winds have subsided and a complete damage assessment can be made.
Toronto Hydro is reminding customers to keep safety top of mind. If damaged poles or downed power lines are spotted, customers should stay at least 10 metres back as they may be energized. Electrical emergencies and power outages should be reported to Toronto Hydro at 416-542-8000.
In preparation for this severe weather, Toronto Hydro activated additional call centre staff to handle the higher than usual volume of calls. It also extended its call centre hours to remain open for the next 24 hours.
Toronto Hydro will also be restoring outages that affect the greatest number of customers first. Localized outages affecting one or two houses will be a secondary priority.
Customers can expect continuous updates from Toronto Hydro via Twitter (@TorontoHydro), on torontohydro.com, and through the media. A voice message update is also available should customers wish to call 416-542-8000.
A reminder to customers without power, please do not assume that Toronto Hydro is aware. Report outages by calling 416-542-8000.
