2012 Recycle Drive
THORNHILL, ON, Oct. 15, 2012 /CNW/ - Drained batteries, used motor oil and worn out tires don't belong in your blue bin or at the curb with your trash. Batteries and motor oil contain harmful chemicals which can contaminate soil and groundwater if they end up in landfills, while most tires are made of non-biodegradable materials which can be a burden on our environment if not properly recycled.
CAA South Central Ontario (CAA SCO) and the Ontario Tire Stewardship (OTS) will take your dead car, household and marine batteries, used motor oil and old tires, off your hands for free and make sure they are recycled safely. It's all part of our 2012 RecycleDrive, a week long eco-friendly initiative which runs from Oct 15-21 at 19 participating garages.
New this year, you can register your school to win a Sustainable Revitalization package worth $20,000. The participating garage which collects the most tires can choose a registered school in their community to receive the prize pack which includes landscaping greenery and eco-friendly products made of recycled tires to beautify their building or playground.
"This is the second year, CAA SCO and OTS have partnered to offer Ontarians a convenient way to responsibly recycle their old car parts," said Gina Banwait, Community Relations Specialist, CAA SCO. "We encourage all motorists to take advantage of this opportunity to get rid of their dead batteries, old tires and used motor oil in an environmentally friendly way."
"The fall is a perfect time to begin thinking about your winter tires and disposing of any that are worn out," said Andrew Horsman, Executive Director, OTS. "These collection events are just one example of the great work being done year round by Ontario Tire Stewardship and CAA SCO to benefit the environment."
As a thank you for doing your part to help preserve the planet, we will send the first 50 participants at each location home with a free pack of yard waste bags.
Meanwhile, CAA members who take part in the recycle drive are eligible to win a set of four new winter tires, five free oil changes for a year or a set of recycled rubber car mats.
