Media Advisory - Peel Regional Council Vote on Closure of 12 Regional Child Care Centres Set for September 13
MISSISSAUGA, ON, Sept. 12, 2012 /CNW/ - After forming a Task Force to study child care in Peel, regional councillors will vote on a recommendation to close the 12 high quality Learn.Play.Care centres in Peel region.
"Councillors should know that parents are watching. We will not vote for anyone who votes to close Peel child care. Parents know how hard it is to find good child care. The region says they have studied the issue but the Task Force never looked at our individual centres. Of 12 centres, not one is said to be vital for the community? It's just not credible. Councillors should reject the motion, if they don't, we will campaign against them in the next election."
In January 2012, with a week's notice to parents, councillors rejected a motion to close Peel child care in favour of further study on the issue.
"These 12 centres are an astonishing 11% of Peel's total child care eligible for subsidy for toddlers and preschoolers. With a licensed capacity of 850 children, it's the families and children in Peel who will suffer if regional councillors vote to close the centres. Peel needs more good child care, not less", added Andrea Calver, Coordinator, Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care.
