The Assembly of the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador Pay Tribute to Éric Gourdeau
WENDAKE, QC, July 5, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - The AFNQL gratefully acknowledges the outstanding contribution of Mr. Éric Gourdeau to the development of relations between Aboriginal Peoples and all the Quebeckers. Having recently passed away, Mr. Gourdeau was the first Deputy-Minister of Aboriginal Affairs in the Quebec government, under the direction of René Lévesque.
"Éric Gourdeau was the source of many initiatives fostering closer relations between our people, and the recognition of the Aboriginal Nations by the Quebec government, including the adoption by the National Assembly, in 1985, of a formal declaration to this effect. The spirit of this document should still be an inspiration to us all and give us the initiative to develop meaningful relationships and on a nation-to-nation and mutual respect basis", reiterated Ghislain Picard, Chief of the AFNQL.
Chief Picard, on behalf of the Chiefs' Assembly, offers his most sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Gourdeau.
