Conservative Confusion Continues: This Time on Affordable Housing
TORONTO, Sept. 6 /CNW/ - John Tory's doubletalk continued today, as he
now seems to find opposing affordable housing virtuous. Except for when he
supports it.
Here, let's let him explain:
- In his platform, there's a pledge to house the homeless
- But he voted against the 2005, 2006, and 2007 provincial budgets, all
of which included investments in affordable housing
- When he ran for mayor of Toronto, he pledged to build 1,000 units of
supportive housing in his first year and 3,000 affordable units over
his three year mandate
- But before that, his Conservative party, which he's so proud of,
ended construction of all new social housing and cancelled almost 500
projects across Ontario upon taking office.
Apparently, to Conservatives, real leadership means supporting now what
you opposed a few months ago. Which you supported a couple of years ago. Which
you opposed before that.
Confused? So are Ontarians.
Here's something that's not confusing:
- Ontario Liberals brought the provincial government back into
affordable housing in a big way
- So far, 18,000 new affordable housing units are either complete or
under construction
- We've provided 35,000 housing allowances to help low-income
households keep up with their rent
Ontario Liberals are the only party in Ontario with a consistent record of
support for affordable housing in Ontario. It's that simple.
