More than Just Hot Dogs - 'Toronto Street Treats' Fair to Promote Healthier Options

    TORONTO, May 30 /CNW/ - Councillor John Filion today joined Toronto chefs
to announce Toronto Street Treats - a lunch time food fair to be held
July 13th at City Hall. At Toronto Street Treats, the City's top chefs will
serve tasty treats from food carts to demonstrate the variety of foods that
could be sold on Toronto streets if provincial regulations were amended.
    "We live in one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world and
yet our street food is anything but diverse," said Councillor Filion, who is
also Chair of the Board of Health. "We are asking the provincial Ministry of
Health and Long-Term Care to amend the food regulations that restrict the
types of food sold on the street."
    Chefs from across the City will host the July 13 event in Nathan Phillips
from noon to 2 p.m. to demonstrate that safe, healthy and diverse foods can be
served from mobile food carts.
    Rain restaurant owners and chefs Guy and Michael Rubino have been
actively working with Councillor Filion to change the way we eat on the
street.
    "We know that people are looking for other options from street food
vendors. Many countries serve amazing food on the street," said Michael
Rubino. "We hope that in Toronto in the near future, you'll be treated to
foods from around the world," added Guy Rubino.
