Energy Optimization Equals Energy Efficiency
New energy management course supported by Ontario Centres of Excellence
and delivered by the Advanced Design & Manufacturing Institute fills gap
in curriculum for engineers
TORONTO, July 3 /CNW/ - Ontario industry is one step closer to being more
energy efficient with the launch of a new course designed to give professional
engineers critical skills in energy management. The Masters level course, the
first of its kind in Ontario, will be delivered through the Advanced Design &
Manufacturing Institute (ADMI) and McMaster University, with the support of
OCE's Centre of Excellence for Energy.
Energy management in engineering processes, product development and
manufacturing is a key issue for competitiveness. The ability to create new
efficiencies will not only contribute to a company's bottom line, but will
also reduce pressure on the electricity grid - and that benefits all
Ontarians. In many industrial organizations, efficient engineering practices
together with effective energy management can generate substantial savings (as
much as 40% of current energy costs).
Dan McGillivray, Managing Director of OCE's Centre of Excellence for
Energy, says, "The course addresses a current gap in the education of
engineers. Developing their capacity to assess and implement energy saving
opportunities for industry, and strengthening their ability to effectively
manage energy consumption, will enable them to make Ontario companies more
efficient and more competitive - this will have a clear return for the
provincial economy."
Historically, Canada has enjoyed a climate of sustained, low energy
prices and abundant resources which has created a legacy of wasteful consumer
and industrial behaviour. The course, Optimization of Energy Efficiencies in
Industrial Processes, was developed to respond to this industry need. As such,
it is also open to practicing professional engineers, as well as engineering
graduate students, who want to develop their capacity in this emerging and
critical area.
Led by McMaster University's Professor Mohamed Hamed, the course takes
place at the Hatch Corporate Learning Centre in Mississauga, beginning in
August 2007.
